Natural Ruby Inclusions
Inclusions within a Ruby can reveal intimate details about it. Gemmologist study these minute features under a microscope to determine where it has come from and if there are any treatments.
Brewing Rutile Storm
Clouds of three directional rutile needles seen inside of a coloured zoned corundum from Myanmar (Burma). These are the inclusions that cause the asterism effect on star sapphires and rubies. In this case, a bi-coloured Burmese star ruby/sapphire. FOV 3.9mm
Red Wave
A giant tsunami like wave tunnel forming amongst a backdrop of rutile rain. The wave like inclusion is caused by light reflecting off the internal surfaces of a fracture (a.k.a feather) within this colour zoned star corundum from Mogok, Burma (Myanmar). FOV 2.9mm
Pleochroic Crystal Cave
Welcome to the entrance of the Pleochroic Crystal Cave. A gap in the dense clouds of rutile needles on the surface of this star sapphire reveals a clear ice like crystal quality underneath. FOV 4.6mm
A Well Formed Crystal
An well formed crystal inclusion seen inside of an unheated Burmese Ruby. Likely to be Apatite. FOV 2.1mm
A Well Formed Crystal - Angle 2
Same Crystal Inclusion. Different Angle. FOV 2.1mm
Crystal Halo
A dark coloured crystal surrounded by a stress fracture. Commonly known as a Discoid fracture or a Zircon Halo. Inside of an Unheated Burmese Ruby. FOV 1.5mm
Rutile Needles
Three-directional rutile needles unaffected by heat in an Unheated Burmese Ruby. FOV 1.0mm
Solid vs Negative Crystal
A solid crystal in the foreground and a negative crystal in the background seen inside an Unheated Burmese Ruby. FOV 1.7mm
Two Phased Feather
Jagged two phased liquid feather inclusion remains unaltered by heat in an unheated Burmese ruby. Viewed under darkfield lighting. FOV 1.3mm
Boehmite Needles
Boehmite exsolution in Burmese Ruby. FOV 1.9mm
Flux Healed Feather
Flux residue seen inside a healed fracture of a heated Burmese Ruby. FOV 2.0mm
Crystal Fingerprint
A plane of crystals which forms a part of a larger fingerprint inclusion inside a rare Unheated Mong Hsu Ruby from Burma. FOV 1.8mm
